Sasha SHTILIK 15 years old Acute myeloblastic leukaemia |
Alexander Shtilik is very "popular" with the department, especially with the female part of it. Alexander is already "a young man" - elegant on the one hand and naughty and spontaneous on the other. If you have asked about Shtilik, you would have heard the following answer: "He is undergoing therapy. He makes sarcastic jokes and gives hugs to nurses now and then. He is O.K!"
But in October 2000 after intensification of the therapy Alexander started to experience complications, which turned into an extremely heavy crisis. Pancytopenia, inflammation... The doctors spent few restless days. The worst thing came very near. At a certain point they had to give him a narcotic to make him sleep.
Now the hospital part of treatment is in the past. Sasha is on the supporting therapy at home. Once a month, however, he spends 2 or 3 days for intravenous infusion in the Center. He’s always welcome here! ;)
June 2001. Sasha is now in the clinic because his cytomegalovirus infection has got worse. Besides, doctors discuss an issue of making Sasha an operation of bone-marrow transplantation during the first remission, without waiting a relapse to come again. Sasha is in the group of high risk, which means that there is a high probability of further relapse. On the sessions of the Leukemia Group of Ukraine that took place in May, there was a discussion about the expediency of bone-marrow transplantation for people with high group of risk, after they go through the Protocol treatment. Sasha and his parents are facing a difficult choice: either to get prepared for a dangerous operation, or to hope that a favorable outcome will come without bone-marrow transplantation. Anyway they should already start looking for a donor - in case Sasha decides to have an operation during remission, or if relapse comes.
